10 Steps To Having A Successful Moving Day

Even though you may think the hard part is done—finding a new home, selling your old home, and then going to settlement—don’t overlook one last hurdle: moving day. Here are ten tips to help you have a smooth moving day:

1) Be a smart packer. Use plenty of bubble wrap, foam peanuts, or newspapers to cushion your belongings. If you want to spend the extra money, many moving companies will pack for you.

2) Label your boxes. Don’t let the movers randomly stack boxes in whatever room is convenient in your new home. You should label your boxes with a quick description of what’s in them and list where they go in your new home.

3) Pack your essentials last. Your essentials might include bedding, towels, food/snacks, utensils, toilet paper, toiletries, tools, paper plates and cups, and paper towels. Pack these items last and have your movers put them in an accessible location.

4) Can your movers get in and out? Make sure the moving truck can get in and out of both your old neighborhood/street and your new one. Let them know about any possible obstacles ahead of time.

5) Remember your kids, pets, and plants. Plan your car trip with their needs in mind. You might want to think of your trip like a vacation. As for plants, make sure you water them and they should be the last thing you put in your car.

6) Keep phone numbers handy. Whether you keep important phone numbers in your cell phone or written down, make sure they’re accessible. Also, it’s a good idea to have the phone numbers of any utility companies from your old home and new home.

7) Have your moving company info with you. Make sure you have the moving company contract/receipt with you and let the movers know how to get in touch with you on the road. You may want to give them an alternate number as well.

8) Keep your valuables with you. Accidents do happen, so it’s a very good idea to take anything of great value—such as photos, heirlooms, extremely fragile items, irreplaceable items, etc.—with you in your car on moving day.

9) Bring extra cash. If you have to travel far on moving day, don’t forget to bring extra cash for tolls and miscellaneous travel expenses. Also, don’t forget to bring along a few extra bucks for tipping the moving company crew.

10) Check for damages. Not only should you check your belongings for damages (caused by moving), but also check for damages to your old house and new house. If you find damages, notify the moving company immediately. ∆
