Yard Sale Questions
“I’M
GETTING READY TO SELL MY HOUSE AND I WANT TO HAVE A YARD SALE, BUT I’VE
NEVER HAD ONE BEFORE. WHAT DO I NEED TO DO? HOW DO I ADVERTISE FOR IT?
AND HOW DO I FIGURE OUT HOW MUCH TO CHARGE FOR THINGS?”
Before you start dragging all of your old stuff out to your front lawn,
first make sure you’re allowed to have a yard sale. Check with your
homeowners association or your local government to see what their
policies or by-laws are concerning yard sales or garage sales. If you
have the green light, start advertising about one or two weeks ahead of
time. Many areas allow you to make hand-made signs and post them around
your neighborhood and community, but make sure you’re allowed to do that
as well. You may also want to think about taking out a small ad in the
local paper (the more local the paper, the better) and posting notices
on community bulletin boards at local stores or even your post office.
As for pricing your items, your goal should be to get rid of everything
rather than trying to make a lot of money. You may have a sentimental
attachment to some of your stuff, but your yard sale customers are
simply looking for bargains. Price your items to sell. If you have to
lower your price on an item in order to make a sale, do it. You
certainly don’t want half of your items to still be sitting in your
front yard at the end of the day. Happy selling! ∆ |
